Mechanisms of Development and Evolution of the Insect Olfactory System

چکیده
To increase detection of a complex chemical environment, vertebrates and insects express an extraordinary number of distinct olfactory receptor neuron (ORN) classes, each functionally specialized to detect a set of odorants. This is achieved as the olfactory system develops and each of these ORN classes makes developmental decisions defining the olfactory receptor genes they will express and their class-specific connections in the brain. In addition to this high level of ORN diversity, olfactory systems are also very dynamic evolutionarily, with both the number and functionality of olfactory receptor genes as well as the requirement for certain ORN circuits being under ecological constraints. In this review, we will discuss molecular and developmental strategies underlying ORN diversity and evolutionary plasticity as well as present the insect olfactory system as a model for evo-devo research in light of recent findings. *Corresponding author: Pelin Cayirlioglu Volkan, Department of Biology, Duke University, Durham, NC 27708, USA, Tel: 9196841150; E-mail: [email protected] Received December 04, 2013; Accepted December 29, 2013; Published December 31, 2013 Citation: Pan JW, Volkan PC (2013) Mechanisms of Development and Evolution of the Insect Olfactory System. Different olfactory perception in heroin addicts: an fMRI study
Background: Addiction as a mental disorder has large adverse effects on brain health. It alters brain structure and deteriorates brain functionality. Impairment of brain cognition in drug addiction is illustrated in many previous works; however, olfactory perception in addiction and in particular the neuronal mechanisms of it are rarely studied. Methods: In this experiment, we recruited 20 he...

Introduction: Theory of mind is one of the most important aspects of cognitive faculty. The theory of mind is impaired in individuals who suffer from mental disorders like autistic children. The ‘autistic-like’ behaviors also have been reported in the congenitally blind children. This study was conducted to examine the presence or absence of theory of mind and its function in congen...

Neuroethology utilizes a wide range of multidisciplinary approaches to decipher neural correlates of natural behaviors associated with an animal's ecological niche. By placing emphasis on comparative analyses of adaptive and evolutionary trends across species, a neuroethological perspective is uniquely suited to uncovering general organizational and biological principles that shape the function...
متن کاملEvolution of insect olfactory receptors
The olfactory sense detects a plethora of behaviorally relevant odor molecules; gene families involved in olfaction exhibit high diversity in different animal phyla. Insects detect volatile molecules using olfactory (OR) or ionotropic receptors (IR) and in some cases gustatory receptors (GRs). While IRs are expressed in olfactory organs across Protostomia, ORs have been hypothesized to be an ad...

In this study the cranial nerves development of H. huso are explained from 1 to 54-days-old (1, 3, 6, 15, 21 and 54 days). Despite all the researches on fish brain, there are no study on nerves evolution on H. huso during their larvae life. For this research 40 samples of larvae H. husowere obtained (from each age, about six samples were selected). The specimens were ...
